The AFL is in the midst of its biggest season in decades and, as it prepares for a massive new television deal, a look at the best teams in the league could provide a good snapshot of the league’s prospects.
While there are a few key surprises, there is plenty of consensus around the top six and there’s no doubt the A-League’s top eight is the most stacked in the world.
But which team is really the best in the Aussie game?
The AFL is still struggling to get its identity right.
We’re in a new league where we’re constantly reinventing the game.
It’s not as if we’ve been around forever.
I’m just going to look at how the teams are playing, and I’m going to use the AFL as an example of what’s working, and what’s not.
The best of the bestThere is no single A-league team that is as well-regarded as the likes of Western Bulldogs and Melbourne, but the best are clearly the Western Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs were the top-scoring side in the competition last year, winning 10 of their last 11 games.
They finished with a top-eight finish in the ladder for the first time since 2011, and they finished fifth in the West Coast competition last season.
It was the first season the Bulldogs won three premierships in a row and they have the best record in the top eight, too.
Their run to the finals in 2016 saw them take two premiers, and it was the same for 2017.
When we look at where they finished in the last five seasons, it’s really, really hard to see them going any lower.
But the Bulldogs are going to have a difficult time doing it again in 2018.
In terms of winning the title, they are definitely in the mix and they might have the strongest team in the game, but that doesn’t mean they’re going to be the best team in this competition.
